systeme.io vs beehiiv, on the free plan

Both run a newsletter. They are built for different jobs, and the free tiers make that obvious once you put the limits next to each other. Every number below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 29 October 2026. I have run systeme.io end to end; I have not yet run beehiiv, and the page says so.

Short version: if you want to sell a course or run a funnel, systeme.io's free plan gives you the machinery (3 funnels, 15 steps, a $10,000 sales cap). If you want to grow a newsletter and eventually sell ads or subscriptions on it, beehiiv's free plan gives you more subscribers (2,500) and a better publishing surface, but one publication and beehiiv branding. → the one I've run

Sources: systeme.io Settings → My plan on our own free account, and beehiiv's pricing page, both read 2026-10-29. Paid-tier prices were not compared (they move); the caps above are the ones that decide when you have to pay.

What each is actually for

systeme.io is a funnel builder with email attached. The free plan is unusual in that it includes the whole machine — landing pages, automation, a course, an affiliate program — and limits you on count and on sales, not on features. If your plan is "capture an email, sell a $49 thing", it does that on day one.

beehiiv is a publishing platform with monetisation attached. The free plan is generous on subscribers and email sending, and deliberately conservative on everything editorial: one publication, one seat, branding stays, 30 days of analytics. If your plan is "publish weekly until the list is worth sponsoring", the free tier is aimed at exactly that.

What I found actually using systeme.io

How to choose in one question

Do you already have something to sell, or do you need an audience first? If you have the thing, systeme.io's free tier will take money by Friday. If the audience is the whole problem, beehiiv is the better surface to grow on and the monetisation can wait. Neither answer is affected by what either company pays me — see the note at the bottom.

Only the tools I have run carry a link, and the systeme.io link above is an affiliate link: it costs you nothing extra and it does not affect the comparison. beehiiv is named from its published pricing only and has no link here until I have run it. Prices and limits change; every figure on this page is dated 29 October 2026.
